내가 지금 영업 수업을 듣는 곳이 맨체스터 대학의 앨런 튜링 건물이어서 앨런 튜링을
소개한 부분이 가장 먼저 눈에 들어왔다.
컴퓨터 공학을 전공한 사람이거나 전쟁 역사에 관심이 있는 사람이라면 한 번쯤
들어봤을 이름이다.
앨런 튜링은 세계 최초의 컴퓨터를 만들었으며
2차 세계대전때 나치 독일군의 에니그마 암호를 풀어 연합군 승리에 기여한 인물이기도 하다.
튜링 테스트의 튜링이 바로 이 사람 앨런 튜링이다.
그런데 맨체스터 대학교에 재직 중 다른 남자와 동성애 관계를 유지한 것이 알려져
처벌을 받고 그 결과 여성 호르몬을 주사하는 화학적 거세형을 받게 된다.
이후 41세의 나이에 청산가리 중독으로 자살한 것으로 알려줬는데 이후
사면 복권 되었고 50파운드 지폐에 튜링의 초상이 새겨지기도 했다.

Alan Turning, inventor of the world's first computer and celebrated codebreaker,
is one of the most influential men of the 20th Century.
He and his colleagues at Bletchley Park were responsible for helping to end World War Two,
two years earlier than predicted.
After this war, Alan moved to Manchester to work at the University where he met his lover,
Arnold Murray.
Associates of Murray broke into Alan's home.
When investigating the crime, the police were more interested in their relationship, however.
When Alan boldly told the police they were lovers, he was arrested, prosecuted, and charged with
gross indecency. Rather than go to prison, he agreed to chemical castration.
Sadly, Alan was found dead from cyanide poisoning at the age of 41 at his home.
A mere 59 years later, in 2013, he was pardoned by Queen Elizabeth 2 and featured on fifty-pound notes.
